Free Trial vs Freemium for SaaS: Which Should You Choose?

Chain7 min read

Apply it with your AI

Pick a free trial when your SaaS shows its value within days and every user costs you money to serve; pick freemium when a free plan can spread on its own and costs little per user. On Pocketsflow a free trial is one setting on a subscription: the buyer enters a card, gets full access for the days you choose, and is charged automatically when the trial ends.

What a free trial is

A free trial gives a new customer the paid product for a fixed number of days. When the days run out, the customer either pays or loses access. Most trials ask for a card at signup, so the first payment happens without the customer doing anything. A trial answers one question for the buyer: is the full product worth the price?

What freemium is

Freemium gives everyone a limited plan for free, forever. Users upgrade when they hit a limit, such as projects, seats, exports or API calls. There is no card at signup and no deadline. Freemium answers a different question: is this product useful enough to keep using, and later, to pay for more of it?

When a free trial is the better choice

A free trial fits a SaaS where each user costs real money, such as AI features, compute, data or support. It also fits a product whose value shows within a few days: a reporting tool that builds its first report on day one, or an API a developer can test in an afternoon. The deadline pushes a decision, and the card on file means the paying customers convert without a second checkout. Pocketsflow's subscription docs list 7 days as the most common trial length, 14 days for considered purchases and 3 days for fast-value tools.

When freemium is the better choice

Freemium is the better choice when a free user costs you almost nothing and brings in other users. Collaboration tools, browser extensions and developer tools with a public profile or a shared link often grow this way: each free user shows the product to someone new. Freemium also suits products whose value builds slowly, like a note app that becomes hard to leave after six months. The cost is patience. Most freemium users never pay, so the free plan must be cheap to run and the paid limit must be clear.

How a free trial works on Pocketsflow

On Pocketsflow you set the trial length in days in the Trial and frequency section of the subscription editor, next to the weekly, monthly or yearly billing frequency. Zero means no trial. The rules are simple:

  • The buyer enters a card at checkout and gets full access at once, with the status trialing.
  • Pocketsflow sends the customer.subscription.trial_will_end webhook before the first real charge, so your app can remind the user.
  • When the trial ends, the card is charged and the status becomes active. A buyer who cancels before the end is never charged.
  • Each buyer gets a plan's free trial once, so the same person cannot restart the trial again and again.

Your app grants and revokes access from Pocketsflow's signed webhooks. Pocketsflow is the merchant of record, so sales tax and VAT on every renewal are handled for you.

How freemium works with Pocketsflow

With Pocketsflow, the free plan of a freemium SaaS lives in your own app. It needs no billing, so there is nothing to create for it. The paid plan is a Pocketsflow subscription. When a free user hits a limit, your upgrade button opens a Pocketsflow checkout, hosted or embedded in your pricing page, and the subscription webhook tells your app to lift the limit. Free users never touch the payment system until they choose to pay.

What a paying user is worth on Pocketsflow

Whichever model you choose, the money comes from the users who pay. Pocketsflow has no monthly fee and charges 4.7% + $0.30 per payment as of November 2026, so a free user costs you nothing in billing fees on either model. The chart shows the fee and what you keep on each monthly payment at common SaaS prices.

At $29.00 a month, the Pocketsflow fee is $1.66 and you keep $27.34. 100 paying users at that price leave you $2,734.00 a month, whether they came from a trial or upgraded from a free plan. The fixed part of the fee weighs more on low prices, which is one reason to offer a yearly plan next to the monthly one.

A middle path: freemium plus a trial of the paid plan

Many SaaS teams combine both models. Everyone starts free, and the upgrade screen offers a 7 or 14 day trial of the paid plan instead of an immediate charge. On Pocketsflow that is a subscription with trial days, opened from your upgrade button. On the Pro plan, Pocketsflow intro pricing adds another option: a lower price for the first payments, such as $1 for the first month, then the regular price.

How to choose between a free trial and freemium

Choose a free trial if serving a user costs real money, your product proves itself within two weeks, and you sell to people who already know they have the problem. Choose freemium if a free user is cheap, your product spreads through use, and the value grows over months. If you are unsure, start with a trial: it is one setting on a Pocketsflow subscription, and you can add a free plan in your app later.
