// how it is worked out

Where each referred sale goes.

Four lines of math. The worked examples use the calculator's defaults: a $100 sale, 30% commission, $5 of costs and a 40% target margin.

  • Affiliate earns

    price × commission

30% of a $100 sale is $30.00. The calculator pays it on the full price, before fees.

  • Fee

    price × 4.7% + $0.30

Pocketsflow's all-in fee, card processing and tax handling included: $5.00 on $100.

  • You keep

    price - commission - fee - costs

    $100 - $30.00 - $5.00 - $5.00 of costs leaves $60.00, a 60% margin.

  • Highest rate

    1 - target - (fee + costs) / price

    For a 40% margin: 1 - 0.40 - ($5.00 + $5.00) / $100 = 50%. Above it, each referred sale keeps less than you want.

Pocketsflow has a built-in affiliate program on the Growth plan ($49 a month) and up: enroll buyers as affiliates with a commission per product, and track their clicks, orders and commission. The fee per sale stays 4.7% + $0.30. Compare plans or see audience and affiliates.

Common questions.

How do I calculate an affiliate commission?

Multiply the sale price by the commission rate. 30% of a $100 sale is $30.00. What you keep is the price minus the commission, the platform fee and your own cost of the sale.

What is the highest commission I can afford?

1 minus your target margin, minus fees and costs as a share of the price. At $100 with $5.00 of fees, $5.00 of costs and a 40% target, that is 50%. The calculator rounds it down to 0.1% so it always meets the target.

What is a good affiliate commission rate?

One that is worth an affiliate's effort and still leaves you your margin. Digital products cost little to deliver, so they can pay more than physical goods. Treat the highest rate above as a ceiling and start below it, so you have room for a bonus tier later.

Is the commission paid before or after fees?

It depends on the program. This calculator takes the commission from the full price, before fees, which costs you the most. If your program pays on the amount after fees, your real margin is a little higher.

What if even 0% misses my target?

Then the sale itself does not reach your margin: the fee and your costs already take too much. Raise the price, lower the cost per sale, or lower the target before you add affiliates.

Does Pocketsflow have an affiliate program?

Yes, built in on the Growth plan ($49 a month) and up. You enroll buyers as affiliates with a commission per product and see their clicks, orders and commission in your analytics. The fee per sale stays 4.7% + $0.30.
