// discount calculator
When a discount pays for itself.
A discount pays off only if sales rise faster than your profit per sale falls. Enter your price, discount and costs to see the sales it needs to earn the same, after Pocketsflow's 4.7% + $0.30.
Discount calculator
$49.00 at 30% off = $34.30
You need 144 sales a month at $34.30 to earn what 100 earn today: 44% more.
Sales needed are rounded up. Fixed costs are left out: they stay the same at any price. So are refunds and buyers who would have paid full price anyway.
// the formula
Discounts cut profit, not just price.
Sales needed = today's sales x full-price profit per sale ÷ discounted profit per sale. With $15 of cost a sale, 30% off $49 needs 81% more sales.
Sale price
Regular price x (1 - discount). $49 at 30% off is $34.30.
Fee on the sale price
4.7% + $0.30 of what the buyer actually pays, so the fee shrinks a little with the price. The $0.30 part does not.
Profit per sale
Price - fee - cost per sale, before and after. The cost of each sale stays the same, so it takes a bigger share of a smaller price.
Sales for the same profit
Today's sales x profit per sale at full price, divided by profit per sale at the discount, rounded up.

Common questions.
How many more sales does a discount need?
Divide your profit per sale at full price by your profit per sale at the discount. At $49 with 30% off and no costs, a sale earns $46.40 before and $32.39 after Pocketsflow's fee, so 100 sales a month become 144: 44% more.
Why do costs make a discount so much harder?
The discount comes out of your profit, not your price. With $15 of cost a sale, the same 30% off $49 cuts profit per sale from $31.40 to $17.39, and 100 sales a month need to become 181.
When does a discount lose money?
When the sale price, minus the fee and the cost of the sale, is zero or less. Then every sale loses money and more sales only lose more. The calculator says so plainly.
Is a discount ever worth it if sales do not rise enough?
On this month's profit, no. It can still be worth it for what comes after: a launch that builds reviews, buyers who come back for the next product, or a bigger email list. Those are not in the math, so decide on them knowingly.
Which fees does the calculator use?
Pocketsflow's published 4.7% + $0.30 a sale on the Free plan, worked out on the discounted price and rounded to the cent. The exact amount can vary by payment method, buyer region and currency, and is itemized on every order.
Can I run a discount on Pocketsflow?
