How to Price a Digital Product (Without Guessing)

Pocketsflow Team··6 min read

Pricing is the highest-leverage decision in your digital product business: it takes five minutes to change a price and months to double your traffic. Yet most creators price by copying a competitor or picking a number that "feels right" — usually too low. Here's a framework that's more rigorous than vibes, without requiring a spreadsheet PhD.

Why cost-plus pricing fails for digital

Physical products get priced as cost + margin. Your digital product's marginal cost is zero, so cost-plus logic collapses into "charge almost nothing" — which is how $200-of-value templates end up priced at $7. The hours you spent are a sunk cost; the buyer is paying for the outcome, not your time sheet.

Anchor to the value of the outcome

Ask: what does the buyer gain, in their terms?

  • Time saved: a template that saves a $75/hour freelancer six hours is worth $450 of their time. Charging $59 is a screaming deal — for both of you.
  • Money earned: a course that plausibly helps someone land one $2,000 client can charge $200 without blinking.
  • Pain avoided: people pay disproportionately to skip confusion, anxiety, and trial-and-error. "Everything I learned the hard way" is a product.

A useful heuristic: price at roughly 10% of the credible value the buyer gets. It feels generous to them and is still 10–20× what cost-plus would have told you.

Use three tiers (and make the middle one obvious)

A single price forces a yes/no decision. Three options change the question to "which one?" — and the decoy effect does the selling:

  • Basic ($19): the core thing (the ebook, the template).
  • Complete ($49): core + extras with high perceived value and zero marginal cost: video walkthrough, bonus templates, updates. This is the one most people should buy.
  • Premium ($149): everything + something scarce — a 1:1 call, a teardown, priority support. Even with few takers, it makes the $49 tier look cheap.

On Pocketsflow you can ship this as product variants plus a one-click upsell at checkout — order bumps alone routinely lift average order value 10–30%.

The tactical details that move conversion

  • Charm pricing works: $19 outsells $20 by more than a dollar's worth. Use $9 / $19 / $49 / $99 endings for impulse-range products; round numbers ($500, $1,000) read as premium for high-ticket offers.
  • Show the anchor: "$49 — less than one billable hour" or a crossed-out launch price gives buyers a reference point. Keep it honest; fake discounts erode trust (and violate consumer law in plenty of countries).
  • Launch pricing beats permanent cheapness: open at 30–40% off for the first week with a real deadline, then settle at full price. Early buyers feel rewarded; your price integrity stays intact.
  • Adjust for geography: $49 lands very differently in Lagos than in London. Purchasing-power-parity discounts grow revenue you'd otherwise never see.

Raise prices until it hurts (a little)

If nobody ever balks at your price, it's too low. A practical loop: raise the price 25% on your next launch; if conversion drops less than 20%, you made more money — keep going. Creators are shocked how often a $29 product sells just as well at $49. You can always grandfather existing customers; you can't refund the years you undercharged.

Don't forget the fee math

Your sticker price isn't what you keep. On a $49 sale, a platform that charges 10% plus payment processing on top leaves you about $43. Pocketsflow's an itemized transaction cost (~$5.00 on $100) — which already covers processing, VAT, invoicing, and chargebacks — leaves you $48.02, with nothing else deducted later. The real lever isn't shaving basis points; it's making sure the fee you see is the fee you pay, with no surprise processing or tax bills after the sale.
