Choose standard Stripe Payments if you want the lowest fee per sale and can register, collect and file sales tax and VAT yourself. Choose a merchant of record if you want tax handled for you: Pocketsflow charges 4.7% + $0.30 per sale as merchant of record, and Stripe's own merchant-of-record option, Stripe Managed Payments, adds 3.5% on top of Stripe's standard processing fee.

Standard Stripe Payments takes about $1.72 on a $49 US card sale. Stripe Tax Basic adds 0.5% on no-code integrations (Checkout, Payment Links, Billing and Invoicing) where you are registered, for about $1.97; on an API integration Stripe Tax costs 50¢ a transaction instead. Stripe Managed Payments takes about $3.44. Pocketsflow takes about $2.60, with card processing, tax collection and remittance included.

What a merchant of record does

A merchant of record (MoR) is the company that legally sells your product to the buyer. Pocketsflow is the merchant of record for every sale in a Pocketsflow store. Pocketsflow calculates the right sales tax or VAT for the buyer's country, collects it at checkout, files it with each tax authority and handles chargebacks. You get the payout without a tax registration in every country you sell to. Read more in what a merchant of record is.

What standard Stripe leaves to you

Standard Stripe Payments is a payment processor, not a merchant of record. You are the seller, so the tax duties are yours. Stripe Tax calculates and collects tax, but on the Tax Basic plan you still register in each place you owe tax and file the returns yourself. Stripe's filing service sits in Stripe Tax Complete, which starts at $90 a month.

  • Register for VAT or sales tax wherever you cross a threshold.
  • File and pay returns on each tax authority's schedule.
  • Answer chargebacks and disputes as the seller.
  • Build your own checkout, file delivery and receipts, or add tools for them.

Stripe Managed Payments: Stripe as merchant of record

Stripe Managed Payments makes Stripe (through Link) the merchant of record for digital products and software subscriptions. Stripe Managed Payments handles tax in 80+ countries, fraud, disputes and buyer support, and it works with Stripe Checkout, Payment Links and Billing. It costs 3.5% per successful transaction on top of Stripe's standard processing fee, so a $49 sale costs about $3.44. It fits a team that already builds on Stripe and wants to keep its own checkout code.

When standard Stripe is the better choice

Standard Stripe Payments fits a team that sells mostly in one country, already has an accountant for tax, and wants full control of a custom checkout. At high volume the lower percentage adds up, and the team can absorb the compliance work. Our Lemon Squeezy vs Stripe comparison covers the same trade-off against another merchant of record.

When a merchant of record is the better choice

A merchant of record fits creators, indie hackers and SaaS founders selling worldwide from day one. One $49 sale to a buyer in Germany creates a VAT duty for the seller. With Stripe Managed Payments or Pocketsflow, that duty belongs to the merchant of record, not to you.

Pocketsflow adds the store around the payment: a storefront, file delivery, license keys, discounts, upsells, email and affiliates, all on the free plan with no monthly fee. Pocketsflow also runs from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor through its MCP server, so an AI agent can create products and checkout links for you.
