On a $49 sale, Lemon Squeezy takes $2.95 and Polar Starter $2.95. Polar Pro takes $2.26, but its $20 monthly fee only pays off above about $1,379 in monthly sales, by Polar's own math. On a $99 sale, Lemon Squeezy takes $5.45 and Polar Pro takes $4.16.
Subscriptions and international buyers
Lemon Squeezy adds 0.5% to every subscription payment, so a $49 monthly renewal costs $3.20 in fees instead of $2.95. Polar's Starter, Pro, Growth and Scale plans have no separate subscription fee. Both add 1.5% when the buyer pays from outside the US. Both work out the fee on the total order value, so VAT raises the fee too. Older Polar accounts keep the Early Member rate of 4% + 40¢, plus 0.5% on subscriptions, until they move to a paid plan.
Payouts and other fees
Lemon Squeezy pays out free to US bank accounts and takes 1% per payout outside the US, or a PayPal fee of $0.50 in the US and 3% capped at $30 elsewhere. Lemon Squeezy also charges 5% on payments won back by abandoned cart emails and 3% on affiliate referrals. Polar passes on Stripe's payout fees with no markup: $2 per month with active payouts, 0.25% + $0.25 per payout, and a currency fee of 0.25% to 1%. Polar charges $15 per dispute and does not refund the transaction fee when you refund a buyer.
Features: what each merchant of record is built for
Lemon Squeezy is an all-in-one store for digital products and software: a hosted storefront, checkout overlays, license keys, subscriptions, discount codes, lead magnets, pay what you want, affiliates and email marketing. Polar is built for developers who sell software, with an API first setup and "benefits" that deliver access after payment: license keys, file downloads up to 10GB, GitHub repository invites, Discord roles, usage credits and feature flags. Polar also runs a remote MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can manage products and orders.
Lemon Squeezy's future after Stripe
Lemon Squeezy belongs to Stripe since 2024. In a January 2026 update, CEO JR Farr wrote that the team is building Stripe Managed Payments, admitted slower support and fewer product updates, and said Stripe plans an easy path for Lemon Squeezy users to move to Managed Payments. Lemon Squeezy's pricing page still invites new sellers to start, but a new store should plan for a move at some point.
When Lemon Squeezy is the better choice
Lemon Squeezy fits sellers who want email marketing in the same tool as their store, sellers whose buyers pay with PayPal, and existing Lemon Squeezy stores that work well today. Moving a working store only to save a few cents per sale is rarely worth it.
When Polar is the better choice
Polar fits developers selling SaaS and APIs, especially on subscriptions, where it skips Lemon Squeezy's 0.5% extra. Polar is also the cheaper choice once monthly sales pass about $1,379, when its Pro plan pays for itself, and the choice for teams who want GitHub and Discord access granted on payment.
Pocketsflow: a third merchant of record
Pocketsflow is a merchant of record for digital products, courses and software, with no monthly fee and 4.7% + $0.30 per sale as of November 2026, so a $49 sale costs $2.60. Pocketsflow collects and pays sales tax and VAT, hosts courses and gives every plan a hosted MCP server for Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor. Order bumps come with the Growth plan and email campaigns with an email plan. Polar is still the better fit for a pure developer product that needs GitHub or Discord access.
